Theron Brown

Sweetgrass basket sewing was an important tradition among African-Americans on Lowcountry plantations. Flat sweetgrass “fan-style” baskets were used during harvest season to separate rice from chaff. Today, the art of sweetgrass basket sewing is alive and thriving at the Charleston City Market, one of the oldest public markets in America.  Theron has a permanent booth on Sunday in Building A space 1 or he can be found in the open market, almost any day of the week.
