Our Handmade in CHarleston Award CEremony

On Thursday, June 13, the Charleston City Night Market is really Jazzing it Up! First comes the Magic, then a "Second-Line Pop-Up" Parade, followed by an AwardCeremony, and more music & Shopping.

At 7:15 p.m., Charleston mayor, John Tecklenburg, will present 22 new local artisans the Market’s official, “Certified Authentic-Handmade in Charleston or “Certified Authentic-Handmade in South Carolina” plaques. The highly coveted plaque, which will be displayed at each recipient’s booth, is both a notification and a reminder to all customer that the Night Market is comprised exclusively of local, handmade items.

But prior to the award presentations, there will be Magic. Magician David Calhoun will be presenting his sleight of hand, legerdemain and prestidigitation. This is street magic, performed for impromptu crowds, and David has performed in similar venues in Amsterdam, Paris, and London. He has just returned from performances in the United Kingdom. While his presentations involve audience members, no one is “made to look foolish and everyone enjoys the show.”

Not finished yet, @7pm The “Carnival Krewe” and performing artists from the Jazz Crawl for Charity will be parading their way through the Charleston City Night Market on Thursday, June 13th. Lead by Mayor Tecklenburg, the New Orleans style “second-line” parade will jumpstart a night full of artistic festivities surrounding the annual Handmade in Charleston Awards ceremony. The award program is implemented to recognize and support local artisans and bring awareness to the uniqueness of their craft. Similarly, the spotlight of the parade will be used to announce the performing artists to be featured in the 5th Annual Jazz Crawl for Charity on September 8th. Among the featured artists to be announced is the newly formed Battery Brass Band. “The Battery Brass Band is a perfect fit for the Jazz Crawl’s cultural exchange mission.” Said bandleader, Steven Sandifer. ”We meld influences from New Orleans brass bands with musical lineage of Charleston, SC, to form a unique sound sure to get your feet moving.” TenCapJazz will also be a part of the parade and will be featured in Anson Square following the Award Ceremony.

Parade formation is scheduled for 7pm at East Bay and Market St.

The Charleston Night Market continues to recruit outstanding local artisans each year in an ongoing effort to provide its patrons with a wide variety of unique merchandise. These newest members now join a veteran group of established artisans whose locally-made products have earned the Night Market a sterling reputation for producing the finest hand made products available anywhere in the Charleston area.

The Night Market is located between Church and East Bay streets in the heart of downtown Charleston and provides world class shopping along with nightly entertainment. The Market is open from 6:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night through December.
